Researchers on Expedition 501, a three-month-long voyage, have unearthed intriguing clues about this underwater enigma. They've dredged up an impressive 13,200 gallons of water from beneath the seafloor, and initial analyses suggest this reservoir, stretching from New Jersey to Maine, formed during the last glacial period, some 20,000 years ago.
But how did this freshwater get there? Dr. Dugan and his team believe it's a result of the unique conditions during the ice age. When sea levels were low, rainfall seeped into the ground, and as sea levels rose again, this freshwater became trapped beneath the sediment. Salinity measurements reveal an interesting pattern: the closer to the shore, the fresher the water, with the sample closest to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard being safe for drinking.
Now, scientists are delving deeper into this discovery, studying the reservoir's microbes, rare earth elements, and pore space to estimate its size more accurately. They're also determining the age of the sediments to pinpoint when this reservoir formed.
