The Baseball Hall of Fame: A Shifting Landscape
One year ago, the Hall of Fame discussion was straightforward, with Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner dominating the conversation. However, the 2026 cycle presents a different scenario. The absence of a clear frontrunner has opened the door for a more nuanced evaluation of potential inductees.
Welcome to the 'Comfort Plus' ballot, where voters have more flexibility to champion players who might have been overlooked in the past. This change allows for a deeper look at players whose careers might not have initially screamed 'Hall of Famer.'
But will anyone actually get in?
Players like Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones, who received significant votes in the previous year, are once again on the ballot. Beltrán, a switch-hitting maestro with a stellar postseason record, and Jones, a defensive wizard who earned 10 Gold Gloves, are strong contenders. Yet, the possibility of no one being inducted remains a reality.
As a 'Big Hall' voter, I believe that historical context is crucial. Hall of Famer Scott Rolen, who started with a modest vote percentage, is a prime example of how deserving players can gain momentum over time. Therefore, I've cast my vote for 10 players on the 2026 ballot.
Focusing on Pitching Greats
Among this group, I'd like to highlight Félix Hernández and Cole Hamels, both starting pitchers, as their cases are particularly compelling.
Sabathia's Hall of Fame credentials are clear. Modern-day aces like Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander are likely future inductees. But where do we draw the line in an era where innings are restricted, and wins are less emphasized?
Félix Hernández, or 'King Félix,' was a dominant force, finishing in the top 10 in Cy Young Award voting six times between 2009 and 2015, winning the award in 2010. His peak was undeniable. However, the cumulative effect of durability played a significant role. Sabathia pitched over 3,577 innings compared to Hernández's 2,729.2. Sabathia also led Félix by over 500 strikeouts.
What if?
Hernández retired at 33, before he could have been part of the 2022 Mariners team that broke a two-decade playoff drought. It's a reminder that postseason opportunities are not always in a player's control. The more crucial measure is their impact within their era.
From 2005 to 2019, only Verlander, Scherzer, and Hamels recorded more strikeouts than Hernández. Hamels' career closely mirrors Hernández's, with similar innings and strikeout totals. Hamels has a superior ERA+ (123 vs. Hernández's 117) and a remarkable 3.41 ERA in over 100 postseason innings, including MVP honors.
The October Factor
Jon Lester and Adam Wainwright will likely gain Hall of Fame consideration due to their postseason success. Hamels, with similar innings pitched, deserves the same recognition. Ultimately, distinctions will be drawn among these players. For now, my ballot reflects that Hamels and Hernández were pivotal pitchers of an era shaped by factors beyond their control.
This winter, the unique nature of the BBWAA ballot allows me to advocate for these players. I am more than happy to do so.
