Lorin Clarke, inspired by her father's captivating stories, embarked on a mission to immortalize their conversations. She believed that capturing these moments would create a lasting legacy for her family. With a podcast studio set up at home, she began recording their conversations, unaware of the profound impact it would have.
A Tragic Turn
Tragedy struck when John Clarke, a renowned satirist, passed away at 68, just a year after the recordings began. Lorin realized that her father's story was not just hers to cherish but belonged to a wider audience.
"I felt like his audience," she says, emphasizing the deep connection her father had with his listeners. "His stories were multi-layered, and the audience felt that it had been cut short. I wanted to ensure that his story meant something to them as well."
But Also John Clarke: A Legacy in Action
Lorin's dedication led to the creation of the documentary 'But Also John Clarke.' She combined the recorded conversations with footage from her father's career and colleagues' stories, resulting in a timeless tribute.
"This documentary is a gift to his beloved audience and a way to keep him with us forever," Lorin explains.
Capturing Memories: A Family's Legacy
Lorin's story highlights the importance of preserving family stories. She encourages everyone to ask questions and record conversations, emphasizing that it's not limited to creative industries.
"Capturing someone's voice is a gift, and every family has a story worth sharing," she says.
Preserving Love Stories: Inez's Journey
Inez Goves, an artist and teacher, embarked on a similar mission to preserve her grandparents' love story. After learning of their terminal cancer diagnoses, she wanted to capture their unique bond.
"I wanted to record their story from their perspective, especially since we hadn't had kids yet," Inez shares. "Their storytelling and bickering over different versions of their story were adorable."
Illustrating History: A Coffee Table Book
Inez's dedication resulted in an illustrated coffee table book about her grandparents' journey. It includes their wedding day, migration from India, and love throughout the years.
"The book is about their resilience through hardships," Inez explains.
A bittersweet Legacy
Inez's grandparents, Ann and Reginald, had the opportunity to see the book before Ann's passing. However, Reginald couldn't witness the final result.
"It was bittersweet, but the book is also for future generations," Inez notes.
The Value of Family History
Dr. Imogen Wegman, coordinator of the Family History program at the University of Tasmania, highlights the significance of recording family stories. She believes that the risk of losing older generations can spark an interest in preserving family history.
"People often start caring as they grow older, reflecting on their life stories and wondering how they connect to their ancestors," Dr. Wegman says.
Recording Your Own Story
Dr. Wegman encourages everyone to record their stories, starting with known information like names and birth dates. She suggests using public libraries and volunteers for guidance.
"Don't worry about gaps; that's the point of this exercise. Start with what you know, and then explore further," she advises.
A Personal Journey: Lorin's Family Secrets
Lorin Clarke, despite believing she knew her father's stories, discovered hidden details during their recording sessions. Her father, John Clarke, shared his mother's heartbreaking love story, revealing a tragic twist.
Neva, Lorin's grandmother, fell in love with Jock, a Scotsman, while working for the New Zealand Army during World War II. Jock planned to move to New Zealand with Neva, but a tragic attack on his train changed everything.
"It was astonishing to learn that the war was over, and someone hadn't been informed," Lorin says, emphasizing the impact of this hidden detail.

Lorin's story highlights the power of sharing family secrets and the importance of recording conversations. Her father's legacy lives on through the documentary, inspiring others to preserve their family's history.
