Marlins Agree to Sign Christopher Morel
The Miami Marlins have reached a major league contract with outfielder Christopher Morel, according to reports from Mike Rodriguez. The deal is described as a one-year agreement, with the possibility of Morel remaining under club control beyond 2026 through arbitration, though the exact salary for Morel’s representation at ISE Baseball has not been disclosed publicly. Reports indicate Morel is expected to predominantly serve as the Marlins’ first baseman.
At 26 years old, Morel has occasionally grabbed headlines for his power-hitting ability, routinely driving balls over the fence. Yet he also carries a high strikeout rate and hasn’t firmly established a permanent defensive position, leaving him as a gifted player still seeking a stable role as a regular big-league contributor.
During his development, Morel spent time at shortstop and third base, with occasional stints in the outfield and at second base. He broke into the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2022, showcasing power by hitting 16 home runs in 425 plate appearances, though he also fanned in 32.2% of his opportunities. In 2023, he added 26 homers across 429 plate appearances, improving his power metrics while his strikeout rate remained high at 31%.
Defensively, the Cubs tried him at multiple positions but he never firmly solidified at any one spot. His glovework was generally viewed as below average at shortstop, third base, and in the outfield, with a more acceptable profile at second base limited by the presence of Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson up the middle.
