Heartbreaking Story: Grandmother Killed by Drunk Driver Sentenced to 10 Years (2026)

A reckless driver has been sentenced to over a decade in prison for the tragic death of a grandmother, highlighting the severe consequences of dangerous driving and substance abuse.

Jamie Hawken, a 30-year-old resident of St Dennis near St Austell, admitted to causing death by dangerous driving during a court session at Bodmin Magistrates Court on November 14. The court was informed that Hawken was operating his vehicle on the B3274 heading toward Ruddlemoor when he veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with 56-year-old motorcyclist Tracy Godfrey.

Following this devastating incident, Hawken received a sentence of 10 years and 8 months at Truro Crown Court, where it was mandated that he serve at least two-thirds of his time behind bars. Additionally, he faces a driving ban lasting ten years.

The events unfolded on Friday, October 13, 2023, when Devon & Cornwall Police were alerted around 10:30 GMT regarding a collision involving a Vauxhall van driven by Hawken and a Honda motorcycle ridden by Godfrey. Disturbingly, after the collision, instead of stopping or contacting emergency services, Hawken fled the scene, driving his severely damaged vehicle for over a mile before abandoning it and walking toward St Austell.

Upon his arrest the following day, police confiscated Hawken's mobile phone, which revealed he had been actively texting and making calls just prior to the crash. It was also disclosed that he was under the influence of both drugs and alcohol, being three times above the legal limit at the time of his apprehension.

Det Con Rachel Ellis from the Serious Collision Investigation Team noted that this case serves as a critical reminder of the dangers posed by irresponsible behavior on the road. "Hawken made a conscious choice to drive in a manner that was evidently hazardous. His intoxicated condition and preoccupation with his phone led him to cross into oncoming traffic with fatal outcomes," she stated.

The family of Tracy Godfrey expressed their profound grief, stating that her loss has irrevocably altered their lives. They extended their sympathies to Hawken's family, acknowledging that they too are suffering due to the repercussions of his actions. "We deeply empathize with the witness who stayed with our grandmother and did everything possible; this is a burden no one should have to endure. We miss her every single day, and it is heart-wrenching to know her life was cut short in such a tragic manner."

This incident raises pressing questions about road safety and accountability. How can society better ensure that drivers are held responsible for their actions, especially those involving substance use? What measures can be implemented to prevent similar tragedies in the future? Share your thoughts below.
