A golfer's dream turned into a bitter disappointment for Harris English at the Ryder Cup. In a recent interview, English opened up about his experience, shedding light on a controversial rule that left him on the sidelines.
The last competitive outing for English was a rollercoaster ride at the Ryder Cup. He was all geared up for a thrilling Sunday Singles match, a chance to showcase his skills and contribute to the American team's comeback attempt. However, fate had other plans.
European player Viktor Hovland, battling a neck injury, invoked the 'envelope rule,' a decision that left English fuming. This rule, agreed upon by both teams, meant that English, despite being fit and ready, had to sit out, and the match was declared a half-point win for each team.
"I was pissed, to say the least. It's every golfer's dream to play in the Ryder Cup, and not getting that opportunity on Sunday was a huge letdown," English shared.
Hovland's injury and the subsequent application of the envelope rule became a pivotal moment in the tournament. While it seemed like a minor footnote at the time, the half-point became significant as the competition intensified. It could have altered the course of the afternoon if Hovland had to play through the injury or forfeit the point.
Despite the disappointment, English spoke highly of his Ryder Cup experience and expressed his desire to qualify for the team again in two years. He praised Captain Keegan Bradley and his teammates, highlighting the team's incredible comeback attempt.

"Scheffler's a magician around the greens. He gave me a very simple answer, and it worked like magic. I'm hoping to incorporate some of his short-game magic into my own game," English said.
Scheffler, known for his quiet excellence, ranks third in scrambling percentage on the PGA TOUR in 2025. English, too, is no stranger to success in this area, ranking 22nd in the same statistic.
As English prepares for his first start since the Ryder Cup at The RSM Classic, he carries with him not only the lessons learned but also the inspiration to perform like the magician he witnessed in Scheffler.
