Get ready for some baseball drama! Elly De La Cruz, the Reds' star player, has a burning desire to represent his homeland, the Dominican Republic, in the prestigious World Baseball Classic (WBC). But here's the catch: he won't be donning the national team's jersey in the upcoming 2026 tournament.
During the recent Redsfest, De La Cruz revealed his aspirations to participate in the WBC. However, the Cincinnati Reds, his MLB team, decided against it, citing an injury concern.
"It was a team decision. I was dealing with a quad injury, and they wanted to protect me," De La Cruz explained. "I understand their reasoning, but my heart yearns to represent my country. I believe in the Reds, and I'm determined to play in the WBC in the future."
De La Cruz, who celebrated his 24th birthday over the weekend, showcased his resilience by playing in all 162 games for the Reds last season. Despite a quad injury that plagued him during the second half, he maintained an impressive performance.
In the first half of the season, De La Cruz's stats were All-Star caliber: a batting average of .284, an on-base percentage of .359, and a slugging percentage of .495, with 18 home runs and 25 stolen bases. However, the second half saw a dip in his numbers, with a batting average of .236, an on-base percentage of .303, and a slugging percentage of .363, along with four home runs and 12 steals.
"The quad injury definitely impacted my performance," De La Cruz acknowledged. "But I'm determined to come back stronger."
Reds manager Terry Francona, speaking at the Winter Meetings last month, emphasized the need to manage De La Cruz's workload. "I could have done a better job of keeping him fresh. He's one of those rare players who brings energy every day, but he takes a beating. Sometimes a day game after a night game might be beneficial for him."
De La Cruz, known for his playful personality, joked about his desire to play every day, even suggesting a "fight" with Francona to prove his point.
"I respect the team's decision, but I'll always advocate for myself. Maybe we'll have a friendly competition to see who wins!"
Despite the challenges, De La Cruz remains focused on self-improvement. "I take full responsibility for my performance. I've learned the importance of self-care, both on and off the field."
