A New Star Emerges: 17-Year-Old Smashes Dutch Junior Record in Backstroke!
The 2025 Dutch Short Course Championships, held from December 19th to 21st in The Hague, kicked off with a splash of excitement. While notable names like Marrit Steenbergen and Nyls Korstanje were absent, the competition was far from lacking in talent. Giovanni Phillipson, a mere 17 years old, blazed through the men's 100m backstroke, touching the wall first in a stunning 52.72 seconds. This wasn't just a victory; it was a record-breaking performance, shattering the Dutch Junior Record and marking a new personal best for Phillipson. Jason van den Berg dominated the men's 50m breaststroke, securing gold with a time of 26.52, a comfortable lead over Bram Zwetsloot (27.08) and Luca Janssen (27.26). While van den Berg's performance was impressive, his personal best of 26.12, set in Rotterdam last October, remains the benchmark to beat.
Here's where it gets controversial: Tessa Giele, a 23-year-old powerhouse, showcased her versatility by competing in multiple events. In the women's 100m IM, she was the only swimmer to break the 1:00 barrier, clocking a solid 59.18. Mare Schallenberg (1:00.25) and Sterre Hendriks (1:01.24) joined her on the podium. However, some might argue that Giele's true strength lies in the butterfly, where she holds Dutch national records in both the 100m and 200m SCM events. The men's 200m fly saw Thomas Jansen, a 26-year-old veteran and 400m IM national record holder, emerge victorious with a time of 1:55.80, shaving .06 seconds off his previous best. Tiago Fonseca (1:56.02) and van der Leest (1:58.54) completed the podium.
